Democrats didn't just win Georgia in 2020 overnight. Stacey Abrams' has spent years transforming the state's politics through her involvement with groups like Fair Fight Action and The New Georgia Project. And The New Georgia Project is now also planning to knock on one million doors to help elect two more Democrat Senators in Georgia's crucial runoff elections on January 5.
Republicans are freaking out, so Georgia's Republican Secretary of State is now acting like he's "launching an investigation" into the group. He's making wild claims that the Abrams-founded group immediately labelled as a "desperate attempt to smear law-abiding organizations." (Oh, and if you're wondering, the claims are false, according to the group's CEO.) The grass roots voter-outreach group had performed an ambitious and highly-effective effort to encourage Georgians to register to vote -- by sending out millions of handwritten letters! Among the millions of addresses were a few that arrived at the homes of people who had passed away, which gave the ghoulish Secretary of State a chance to literally exploit the dead, using them as unwilling pawns in his smear of Abrams' group as wanting to register dead people.
This gave Fox News something new to lie about, with front-page headlines braying "Georgia group founded by Stacey Abrams under investigation" with a subheading noting the group was "previously chaired by Democratic Senate candidate Raphael Warnock."
It's dirty politics, pure and simple. But what are we going to do about it?
If you're worried that Democrats might still lose the Senate because we don't have enough in-person door-knockers in Georgia, you'll want to support The New Georgia Project, who are the ones who are actually out there doing the work. But there's more good reasons for a flood of donations to the group in response to Georgia's bogus investigation. We can send the message that harassing Georgia's voting rights groups helps them instead of hurting them by provoking a flood of donations from supporters around the country.
It's up to us. The ball's in our court...
We spent four years waiting for that moment when we got our say, and could finally exercise our power in an election that can change the course of the country. We'll live with whatever we do (or don't do) over the next four weeks. It will affect the laws we pass, the judges we approve, and even who will ultimately get to sit in Joe Biden's cabinet for the next four years.
This is our chance to help.
