Tea Party Candidate Tries Turning 'Silicon Valley' Into an Insult

Moderate Democrat Josh Harder is being smeared as "a shady San Francisco" investor
A moderate Democrat running for Congress in California's farm country is being attacked by a tea party Republican --
for working in Silicon Valley
. So idealistic young Josh Harder becomes "a shady San Francisco venture capitalist" in ominous red letters. "He has to make me scary," Harder says, in a district which went for Hillary Clinton in 2016, "because if he doesn't, he knows we're going to win."
They’re fighting to represent
California's 10th Congressional district, but Recode calls their race
"something of a referendum on how people feel about Silicon Valley at this moment of reckoning for Big Tech," seeking to create "that vague there's-something-about-him doubt." But what's most interesting is that attack is completely false, according to
Recode
. "Harder aides say that he only lived in the Bay Area for a total of seven months, and the Democrat grew up here until he headed to Stanford for college... 'It's totally false, but it's bad enough that if people have an inclination to believe the worst, it could add one percent or two percent -- and that could make all the difference.'"
Ironically, his tea party opponent, Jeff Denham had to
evade process servers to avoid a lawsuit over how he'd called himself a "farmer" on the ballot
. (He's instead a wealthy landowner who rents out his land to someone else, and actually makes most of his money selling plastic products.) Protesters have now started calling Denham a "fake farmer." But this race is the first real test for "smart, early-in-their-career moderates who are willing to give up making big money to run for office,"
Recode
suggests -- and if they can succeed, they can change the world.
"The tech boom over the last decade has created a whole group of these young professionals, many of whom are new to politics but could perhaps become credible candidates."
