I think Obama actually won with today's budget compromise. He lost tens of billions of dollars in federal money -- but he'd already won nearly $800 billion more just four months ago, and he successfully defended it against a Republican onslaught. And one key statistic proves that Obama is still winning.
In December Mark Zandi estimated that the recovery would become "self sustaining" with the extra stimulus Obama extracted during the December tax bill compromise. "Of its estimated $900 billion-plus cost over two years, roughly $120 billion covers the high-end tax cuts and the estate tax cut," USA Today reported, while "$450 billion covers Mr. Obama's wish list and $360 billion covers the tax cut extensions both parties favored."
Even if you accept that Obama got $78.5 billion less than he wanted -- that's less than 10% of the stimulus from December. (Or, to put it another way, Obama defended more than 90% of the stimulus money.)
In spite of a misguided Republican assault on the American people, Obama's number one concern was defending the ongoing recovery. And Obama succeeded.
